Surreal Sculpture Artist, Cheri Mittermaier, Studied Under Twenty Plus Artists At The Armory Arts Center In West Palm Beach, Fl

This article contains the early beginnings of “Bosom Bunny”, a sculpture by the artist, Cheri Mittermaier.

It started with a foot. Bosom Bunny was Cheri Mittermaier’s first sculpture. In 2005, Cheri was in a workshop at the Armory Arts Center. Her instructor was Patti Warashina. Patti was teaching the class how to make figures with coils from the bottom up. Cheri started with a foot. It looked very bad because it resembled a shoe with toes. Debbie Weinstein, (Chair of the Ceramics Department) came to Mittermaier’s rescue. Debbie made a foot and then Cheri made a foot. She got as far as the knees when the workshop session had ended. The class was over. As embarrassing as this was, it took Cheri months to get above the belly button on the piece. Debbie Weinstein told Mittermaier that she had “artistic constipation”. By then, Cheri’s sculpture (which was comprised of water-based clay) was rapidly drying out and a foot broke off so it was unstable. Weinstein told Cheri that she needed to make a separate piece for the top half of the body and it must be completed quickly. Mittermaier finished it in two days. Cheri made the sculpture to be of a women with the head of a rabbit. This artwork was a nod to Joe Bova, a sculptor whom Cheri had admired. She thought his sculpture was funny. Bosom Bunny was fired in the kiln and it sat around the Armory as an unglazed piece for months. Then Cheri took a workshop with Rimas VisGirda followed by a workshop with Ron Korczynski. Both artists use a vivid spectrum of colors in their work. She combined their two palettes into the color choices for Bosom Bunny. Mittermaier used Ron Korczynski’s language of glazing, i.g., going off register and blocks of color that bleed together with crazy dark grey markings. So the bottom of the sculpture got tossed and the top of the Bosom Bunny lives on.

Cheri Mittermaier was born in 1963 in Indiana. She graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelors degree in Psychology with a concentration in Fine Arts and Humanities. Cheri currently lives and works in West Palm Beach, Florida USA.
